The Danube Bridge at Mohács and the associated ~30 km of new road network represent the most significant logistics development in Southern Transdanubia: travel times between Serbia and Western Europe will be reduced, accessibility will improve, and new industrial and logistics hubs will become market-ready along the Mohács–Bóly–Pécs corridor.
“Early entrants” can gain an advantage in terms of land, real estate, and labor.
Why is the Mohács crossing strategically important?
Construction of the four-lane bridge and the riverbed piers is already underway, using state-of-the-art technologies that are novel in the Hungarian context. Spectacular construction engineering solutions are being employed for the project (such as the use of precast concrete panels to create a dry working area in the riverbed), which demonstrates the project’s progress and pace.
The project is not just a bridge: a total of nearly 30 kilometers of new roads and interchanges will be built on both sides of the river, including the widening of the section of Route 57 between the M6 and the bridge to 2×2 lanes, as well as the construction of a new four-lane connection on the island (Újmohács) side. Together, these developments will transform Mohács into a true logistics hub of regional significance.
The national press and policymakers also emphasize its economic significance: the bridge is no longer merely a transport link but a distinct economic bridge between the Balkans and Western Europe—playing a significantly greater role in transit and supply chains compared to earlier concepts that focused primarily on local traffic.
What is the current status of the construction, and what is the schedule?
Key work on the bridge piers began in the fall of 2025, with earthworks and embankment construction proceeding in parallel on the future four-lane section between the bridge and Route 56. The target completion date for the related road project components coincides with the bridge’s handover; the client has already communicated tangible completion rates for the road sections by the end of 2025.
The scale of the project is quite impressive: according to plans, approximately 28–30 km of new road network, several bridge structures, and interchanges will be built to connect to the bridge, which will permanently improve the region’s accessibility in the long term and relieve traffic on the current crossings.
Market impacts: what does this mean for a logistics/manufacturing company?
1) Accessibility and travel time
A new, more predictable corridor will be established between the Serbian border (Udvari crossing) and the M6–M5–M1 Western European corridor. This could reduce transit risks and “last-mile” costs for industrial sites in the Mohács–Bóly–Pécs area.
2) Industrial and logistics properties
The expansion of Route 57 to two lanes in each direction and the new interchanges in the vicinity of the bridge will pave the way for additional Class A warehouse and light industrial developments. Rents and land values are expected to rise moderately in the coming years due to increased demand—particularly in locations near the bridge with good access to the highway.
3) Attracting
Talent: Improved accessibility and the proximity of Pécs’s higher education institutions (University of Pécs) together enhance recruitment potential—particularly for high-tech manufacturing and SSC/LSC support functions.
4) Exports and the supply chain
The bridge could provide an alternative, time-stable outlet for Serbian-Croatian trade—which could result in faster turnaround times and less volatile delivery windows for suppliers in the automotive, machinery, and agri-food industries.
Where should you take a position?
- Industrial sites and access roads near the bridge – quick time-to-market advantage, high visibility; suitable for cross-docking and last-mile distribution functions.
- Mohács–Bóly corridor (Route 57) – 2×2 lanes and turbo roundabouts: good access to the M6, multi-purpose warehouse/manufacturing.
- The Pécs metropolitan area – a larger labor market, proximity to the University of Pécs, and B2B services.
