Transportation and Logistics

The geographical location of Baranya County is defined by its mountains and rivers.

It is bordered by the Danube to the east and the Drava to the south, and its territory is crisscrossed by the west-east ranges of the Mecsek and Villány Mountains. The mountains dictate the transport routes, which were built to bypass the higher elevations.

M6 Motorway and M60 Expressway

From a logistics perspective, the M6 and M60 expressways are the most important roads.

The distance between the county seat and the capital is 222 km. The journey is slightly shorter—roughly 200 km—if you choose to take Route 6 instead of the highway. For the western and northern parts of the county, the relevant connection to the expressway network is Route 67, which starts in Szigetvár and becomes a 2×2-lane highway from Kaposvár.

Plans for the near future include the expansion of the expressway network. With the section of the M6 between Bóly and the national border, a direct expressway connection to Croatia may be established starting in 2025. The extension of the M60 from Pécs toward Szigetvár and then Barcs serves the same purpose. The first step is to prepare the plans, for which funding is available.

Long-term plans include another major road construction project: upgrading the section of Route 67 south of Kaposvár to Szigetvár to a high-speed highway.

The rivers of Baranya County: the Danube and the Drava

The county is bordered on two sides by rivers, which pose challenges for road transport but also offer opportunities for river transport.

There is currently no bridge across the Danube in Baranya County; the river can be crossed at Baja or via the Mohács ferry. Construction of the Mohács bridge has begun, and it is expected to open in 2028.

On the Drava River within Hungarian territory—more precisely, at the border—there is only one crossing point: the bridge between Drávaszabolcs and Alsómiholjác. East of this, road traffic can use two additional border crossings: between Beremend and Petárda, and between Udvar and Főherceglak.

The gateway for river transport is the port of Mohács, which is the EU’s only river border port. Significant development is planned for the near future.

Can We Help You?

The main goal of the county’s investment promotion coordination is to provide a one-stop service for businesses and investors.

We assist with finding real estate and business sites, navigating local regulations and permits, and identifying partnership opportunities within the county.

Domestic and international rail networks

The railway network in Baranya County is of average density.

The most important route is the electrified main line No. 40 connecting Budapest and Pécs, on which InterCity trains run every two hours.

International rail traffic takes place at the crossing point between Magyarbóly and Pélmonostor; although passengers must transfer, the trains connect Pécs with Osijek.

Pécs-Pogány Airport

Connections to almost any destination in Europe.

Via Pécs-Pogány Airport—using aircraft with a maximum weight of 46 tons—direct air links can be established to virtually any European destination.
