Small towns in Baranya County received significant funding through two 2026 calls for proposals under the Hungarian Village Program. These funds will be used to finance transportation and drainage improvements, the renovation of municipal properties, and the purchase of equipment to support local public services.
Based on the published lists of decisions, local governments in Baranya County collectively received more than 2.7 billion forints in grants. According to the county-wide summary, Baranya has thus become one of the most successful regions in the country under these two grant programs.
A portion of the grants is earmarked for the development of local transportation and stormwater drainage infrastructure. This funding can be used to renovate roads, sidewalks, and systems that facilitate the safe drainage of stormwater. The official list of approved projects includes, among others, Mecseknádasd with more than 52 million, Kárász with nearly 47 million, Feked with 39.4 million, Kővágószőlős with 38.3 million, and Hetvehely with 37.8 million forints in funding.
The other grant program supports the development of municipally owned properties and purchases necessary for the performance of local government functions. The funds can be used to modernize municipal buildings, develop cemeteries and playgrounds, and purchase municipal equipment as well as vehicles for farm and village caretakers. Among the recipients are, for example, the municipalities of Abaliget, Adorjás, Almáskeresztúr, Alsómocsolád, Áta, and Babarcszőlős.
Grants under the Hungarian Village Program are provided from domestic budgetary sources in the form of pre-financing and do not require any contribution from local governments. This is particularly important in Baranya County, which is characterized by a settlement structure consisting of small villages, where many smaller municipalities would have only limited ability to carry out major renovations or equipment purchases using their own revenues.
These developments can bring about changes that are directly noticeable in everyday life: transportation can become safer, stormwater drainage can improve, community and municipal buildings can be modernized, and the provision of local services can become more efficient. In addition, these investments and procurements can generate new orders for local and regional businesses.
The funding decisions have been made; in the coming period, local governments can begin preparing for the projects and carrying out the necessary procurements and construction work.
