The search for a contractor has begun for the access road that will provide a direct link between the Villány wine region and the M6 motorway. The project will improve access to the region with more than 7 kilometers of new, two-lane road and a connector leading to Márok—the public procurement is conditional, and the contract will take effect once financial coverage is secured.
What exactly is being built?
- Main section: a completely new, approximately 7.04-kilometer-long, two-lane access road connecting the Villány interchange of the M6 with the eastern end of the Villány bypass.
- Branch line: an additional two-lane connection to Márok, approximately 1.185 km long.
- Artwork: A new bridge is being built over the Mároki Stream.
- Digital operations: In addition to obtaining the necessary permits, the winning bidder is also responsible for creating a BIM model for the project, which will support future operations.
The background to this project is that the M6 reached the Croatian border last spring: the Villány interchange was completed, but the road connecting the wine region to the highway had not yet been built at that time—this public procurement process is now addressing that gap.
Why is this important for the wine region?
- Faster and more convenient access: visitors from Hungary and abroad can reach the Villány wineries and tourist attractions directly from the highway.
- Economic recovery: improved accessibility can lay the groundwork for more predictable, year-round business for accommodation providers, restaurants, event organizers, and suppliers.
- Traffic safety: The new route and grade-separated interchanges will relieve traffic congestion in towns and villages, reduce through traffic, and lower the risk of accidents.
- Regional connections: the branch leading toward Márok also improves access for the surrounding villages.
What is the current status of the project?
The Ministry of Construction and Transportation has launched the public procurement process. This is a conditional procedure, meaning that the construction contract will only take effect if funding is available. The detailed technical specifications are also available on the government’s project website, which specifies the connection points: from the Villány interchange at the 205+810 km mark of the M6 to Route 5718, to the eastern end of the Villány bypass.
Background: Opening of the southern section of the M6
The main sections of the final stretch on the Hungarian side were opened to traffic on May 2, 2024, south of the Bóly area; the Villány interchange was already completed by then, but the wine region access road was not yet finished. The Croatian extension became available in 2025, further increasing the practical significance of the regional highway connection.
Tentative schedule
Construction can begin once the public procurement process has been completed, the contractor has been selected, and funding has been secured. The exact schedule and completion date will be specified in the contract; further information on the status of the process will be provided in official announcements by the ÉKM and the investor.
