One of the key players in Mohács’s industrial history has embarked on a new path of growth: Mohácsi Vasöntöde Kft. has not only avoided liquidation in recent years but has also undergone a significant technological overhaul. The ongoing 1.5 billion forint development project aims to automate manufacturing processes, increase efficiency, and strengthen modern industrial operations.

The company’s history is particularly important to Mohács’s economy. The legal predecessor of Mohács Iron Foundry was founded as early as 1894, making the company a defining element of the city’s industrial heritage. In the early 2010s, however, the company found itself in a difficult situation. Antal Nágl, the managing director and majority owner of Mohácsi Vasöntöde Kft., as well as the managing director and owner of Steel-Metál Kft., acquired a majority stake in the company in 2011. The goal was to ensure that the long-established Mohács-based industrial enterprise could continue to operate under a new organizational structure.

Since then, the iron foundry has undergone a significant technological transformation. The previous manufacturing and casting technologies were replaced, and a new, environmentally friendly melting system was introduced. As a result of these improvements, environmental impact and noise pollution have been reduced, while the plant now meets modern industrial and environmental standards.

The investment currently underway is another important step in this process. The 1.5 billion forint investment involves the automation of the forming process, the core shooting machine, the cleaning machine, and the machining center. In practice, this means that the company’s production processes can become more efficient, more precise, and more competitive.

This development is significant not only from the perspective of a single company. The operations of Mohácsi Vasöntöde and Steel-Metál Kft. together form a strong industrial base in Mohács. In 2014, the group acquired the facilities of the bankrupt Épgép-Duna Kft., as well as the manual and machine-based equipment used in its metalworking shop. To continue the metalworking operations, the employees were also taken on, so the developments went hand in hand with preserving jobs and creating new industrial capacity.

Significant investments have also been made in the field of scrap metal processing. Three shredding lines and an X-ray separator were installed at the Mohács sites, at a total cost of approximately one and a half billion forints. This has significantly improved the scrap metal and hazardous waste treatment capacity of Mohács and the surrounding region, which is also an important step forward in terms of the circular economy.

A total of approximately 120 people currently work at the two sites in Mohács. This impact on employment is particularly significant in a region where maintaining and expanding industrial jobs is one of the most important goals of economic development. The revitalization of the iron foundry is therefore not only a corporate success story but also an economic achievement of city- and region-wide significance.

In the coming years, new industrial and logistics opportunities may open up for Mohács thanks to the Danube bridge, port connections, and regional transportation developments. In this context, local industrial players that already have a stable foundation in production, technology, and employment are particularly important. The developments at the Mohács Iron Foundry and Steel-Metál Kft. clearly demonstrate that the city’s industrial foundations can not only be preserved but also further developed in a modern, environmentally friendly, and automated direction.

The message of this story is clear: Mohács has industrial expertise, entrepreneurial commitment, and the capacity for development on which the city’s next chapter of economic growth can be built.
