Szakács Kft.’s home textiles and curtains are made in Komló but are sold in many countries around the world. The Komló-based company is a prime example of how traditional industrial know-how, local expertise, and continuous development can still create competitive economic value in Baranya today.
Szakács Kft.’s main business is the manufacture and distribution of home textiles. Albien Peer has led the company since 2008, and under his leadership, the business has become a stable, export-oriented player: approximately 90 percent of its products are sold on foreign markets. This is a remarkable achievement in and of itself in an industry where international competition is extremely fierce and where mass production often puts significant pressure on European manufacturers.
One of the keys to the Komló-based company’s success is precisely that it does not try to compete with mass production. Szakács Kft.’s strengths lie in the manufacture of custom-sized curtains, quick response times, and flexible delivery. This is particularly important for orders in the hotel and construction industries, where home textiles are often installed during the final stages of construction, meaning deadlines are frequently extremely tight.
The company is capable of producing enough curtains to meet the needs of an entire hotel in a short period of time, which gives it a significant competitive advantage. This requires state-of-the-art technology, advanced machinery, and experienced staff. The company recently established a new, modern facility, which has not only increased its production capacity but also signals that the company has long-term plans in Komló.
The development is also significant from an economic perspective. Szakács Kft. consistently employs 20–25 people, the majority of whom are local residents, primarily from Komló. This strengthens local employment, reduces the need to commute, and helps ensure that the professional expertise built on the town’s industrial traditions remains in the community.
This is particularly important for Komló. A strong sewing industry base has existed in the region since the 1970s and 1980s, and Szakács Kft. continues to rely on it today. The expertise of the local workforce, the company’s flexibility, and its presence in export markets together represent an economic model that builds on both tradition and modern market demands.
Employee retention also plays a key role in the company’s operations. The low turnover rate shows that the company views its employees not only as a source of production capacity but also as part of a community. Appropriate working conditions, stable operations, and deep roots in the local community are factors that contribute to competitiveness in the long term.
The story of Szakács Kft. is therefore not merely a portrait of a successful business in Komló. It also shows that even smaller industrial players in Baranya are capable of succeeding in international markets if they identify their own strengths. The export of Komló curtains clearly demonstrates that local expertise, high-quality manufacturing, and the ability to adapt quickly continue to represent significant value today.
