One of the most significant developments in Pécs’s industrial revitalization—and one that is easily understood even in an international context—is that Kontron Electronics is relocating manufacturing operations to the city that were previously based in China. Behind this decision lies a capacity expansion program worth approximately 2 billion forints, which the government is supporting with 400 million forints; the development will create 30 new jobs and, according to reports, will also help secure the long-term retention of approximately 300 additional jobs at the Pécs site.
However, the significance of the investment lies not primarily in the volume of production, but in the range of products and technologies that will be brought to Pécs. At its Pécs manufacturing facility, Kontron is further developing the production of high-tech electronic components and automated control solutions tailored to the needs of suppliers in the medical technology, aerospace, and robotics sectors. These sectors typically impose high quality and traceability requirements, so the ramp-up of production is accompanied by an increased emphasis on competencies in production support, quality assurance, engineering, and process development.
Specific components of the development package include the installation of two new production lines and the construction of a solar power system. The goal of the capacity expansion is for the Kontron Group to relocate part of its production currently based in China to Pécs, Hungary.
Kontron Electronics has had a long-standing presence in Hungary: the company has been operating here since 1991, and its production lines in Pécs and Tab have an annual capacity of more than 1.8 million units. This background is significant because the production relocated from China is not arriving on a “trial” basis, but is being established at a manufacturing base that already produces at industrial scale and provides an integrated electronics service chain.
From the perspective of Pécs and Baranya, the message of the announcement is clear: the region is not only capable of accommodating new production capacity, but also high-value-added activities that are relocating as part of a global shift in manufacturing. The emergence of manufacturing linked to high-tech industries typically strengthens the local supplier and service provider ecosystem as well—ranging from industrial maintenance and logistics to quality assurance and engineering support, all the way to training partnerships.
The company is also investing in recruitment and talent development: Kontron specifically highlights training and internship opportunities on its own platforms, which can also strengthen ties with local vocational training and higher education institutions (particularly the University of Pécs). Kontron’s expansion in Pécs is thus both an industrial investment and a strong positioning statement: In the coming years, Pécs is poised to increasingly emerge as a hub for international, high-tech manufacturing and engineering activities—in fields where quality, expertise, and supplier reliability form the foundation of competitiveness.
