International networking is playing an increasingly important role in regional economic development. For businesses in Baranya and Southern Transdanubia, a competitive advantage can come not only from operating with high quality, stability, and flexibility, but also from identifying, in a timely manner, those foreign market and industrial partners with whom they can collaborate over the long term.
The professional meeting in Hosszúhetény, organized at the invitation of Mayor Dr. László Csörnyei with the participation of businesses interested in Hungarian-Chinese industrial cooperation, fits into this process. The program was part of the preparations for the planned establishment of a South Transdanubian Chinese–Hungarian Industrial Cluster, which aims to provide an organized framework to help the region’s businesses enter the Chinese market, build relationships, and expand their business opportunities. Renátó Györki, the China-focused business development envoy of the Pécs–Baranya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, briefed the participants on the initiative.
Representatives from various sectors attended the meeting, ranging from construction and engineering services to the food industry, security technology, and the healthcare sector, all the way to technology and industrial manufacturing companies. During the discussions, practical experiences were shared, including successful examples demonstrating that Hungarian-Chinese economic relations can manifest not only in export-import cooperation but also in investments and long-term strategic partnerships.
One of the key topics of the event was the presentation of a Hungarian trade center to be established in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. In the future, the planned center could provide support to Hungarian companies in establishing a local presence, setting up businesses, developing sales channels, and fostering business and municipal relationships. According to longer-term plans, the initiative could even serve as the foundation for an industrial park that would provide opportunities for Hungarian companies to enter the Chinese market.
Sichuan is one of China’s key economic regions, with a significant industrial, technological, and commercial infrastructure. At the same time, due to the size of the Chinese market, its unique operating environment, and its business culture, successfully entering the market requires thorough preparation. This is precisely why forms of cooperation that provide a common platform for information sharing, networking, and the exchange of experiences can be of particular importance.
From Baranya’s perspective, the significance of such initiatives extends beyond individual events. They demonstrate that businesses in the region are increasingly operating in an open economic environment that embraces international connections. This is particularly important in terms of industrial services, the machinery industry, technological developments, supplier relationships, and expansion into foreign markets.
The venue itself sends a powerful message. The fact that the meeting took place in Hosszúhetény clearly demonstrates that economic diplomacy and business networking are not exclusively tied to large urban centers. Smaller towns can also be active players in regional economic development if they are supported by appropriate cooperation among local governments, chambers of commerce, and businesses.
The most important question for the coming period will be what concrete business results emerge from these initial contacts. Face-to-face meetings are often the starting point for longer-term processes: in the form of professional consultations, targeted negotiations, joint projects, supplier relationships, or international market collaborations. In this process, the planned cluster and the connections in Chengdu can provide support to businesses in South Transdanubia that may facilitate their entry into the Chinese market.
For Baranya, all such networking efforts reinforce the county’s position as an attractive economic region—not only due to its geographic location, industrial zones, and labor market conditions, but also because of its international openness.
