A major transportation development package will improve access to several regions of Baranya County: under the project titled “Transportation Development in Baranya County 1,” with identification number TOP_PLUSZ-6.1.2-21-BA1-2023-00003, “Transportation Development in Baranya County 1,” sections of the secondary road network in poor condition will be renovated at five locations, covering a total of 10.412 kilometers.
The value of the investment is 3,003,170,550 forints; the beneficiary is Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt. The goal of the project is to improve access to communities, workplaces, services, and tourist destinations, while safer transportation also facilitates daily commuting and regional economic ties.
The project affects several regions of the county that are important from an economic and tourism perspective. The development package includes the section of the Villány–Újpetre connecting road affecting the Villánykövesd and Palkonya areas, the section of the Mohács–Pécsvárad connecting road between Mohács and Székelyszabar, the section of the Sátorhely–Villány connecting road in the Sátorhely and Majs areas, the Bóly section of the Bezedek–Bóly connecting road, and the section of the Baksa–Szabadszentkirály connecting road affecting the Szabadszentkirály–Szentlőrinc area.
These improvements are not merely pavement repairs. The technical scope includes, in several locations, the replacement of local subbase sections, reinforced pavement, drainage improvements, the renovation of bridges and other structures, the modernization of bus stops, and the renewal of road signs and pavement markings. This means that the project will create not only more comfortable but also safer travel conditions.
The development of the Villány–Újpetre road is particularly important for the Villány wine region. The section of the road passing through Palkonya and Villánykövesd will not only make daily travel easier for locals but is also significant for wine tourism and the regional hospitality industry. The accessibility of the wine region directly influences visitor numbers, the success of events, and the revenue of local service providers.
The development of the Mohács–Pécsvárad connecting road is of paramount importance due to the economic standing of the Mohács region. In the coming years, Mohács could become one of Baranya County’s most important growth regions thanks to the Danube bridge, port connections, and industrial and logistics developments. The renovation of smaller but strategically important secondary road connections therefore fits well with larger regional transportation development initiatives.
Revitalizing the Sátorhely–Villány connection is important not only for tourism but also for improving access to historic sites. The Sátorhely, Majs, and Villány regions are all linked to the Mohács500 commemorative year, the Villány wine region, and the South Baranya tourism network. Improved road conditions could bring noticeable changes for visitors, local businesses, and daily commuters alike.
In the case of Bóly, the development of the Bezedek–Bóly connecting road is linked to an economic environment that was already on the rise. Thanks to its industrial park, entrepreneurial base, and geothermal energy developments, Bóly is one of the best examples of small-town economic development in Baranya County. The road renovation can further improve access to industrial and service areas.
The affected section of the Baksa–Szabadszentkirály connecting road is crucial for regional transportation links in the Szentlőrinc area. The condition of secondary roads is particularly important in areas where access to workplaces, educational institutions, health care services, and county seats is largely via public roads.
The direct economic impact of the project lies in the fact that a higher-quality road network reduces travel time, increases traffic safety, improves labor mobility, and strengthens local businesses’ connections to larger regional markets. The investment is therefore not only a transportation issue but also a matter of competitiveness.
For Baranya, developments that improve not only major transportation corridors but also connections between smaller towns and economic hubs are particularly important. The current road renovation package addresses precisely this shortcoming: it makes daily travel safer and more predictable at multiple locations throughout the county, while supporting tourism, industrial operations, and access to the labor market.
