Today, Pécs-Pogány Airport is much more than just a small regional airport on the map.

Located on the southern outskirts of Pécs, just a few kilometers from the city, right next to Highway 58 and connected to the M60 highway interchange, it boasts a location that is ideal for logistics, aviation, or service industry investments. Due to its proximity

to the Croatian border, the road corridor leading toward the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding industrial parks, the airport can serve as a natural gateway to the economy of Southern Transdanubia and the broader Central European region.

The airport’s IATA code is PEV, its ICAO code is LHPP, and it operates as a public, commercial airport. Its paved runway is 1,500 meters long, making it ideal for serving regional passenger and cargo turboprop aircraft. Instrument landing systems (ILS, RNAV procedures) and traditional navigation equipment ensure reliable operations, while modern ground handling facilities allow the airport to flexibly adapt to individual needs.

A particular advantage is that the airport handles passenger and aircraft services itself: there are no intermediary large multinational handling or fuel service providers, so decision-making is fast and flexible, and agreements can be tailored specifically to the investor’s needs. AVGAS 100LL, JET A-1, and conventional automotive gasoline are available, covering the full spectrum of light aircraft, business, and cargo traffic. The airport also functions as an international entry point, ensuring that customs and border control requirements are met.

One of the most important milestones in recent times is that Pécs-Pogány Airport has become the base airport for an international cargo airline, Fleet Air International. The company’s ATR72 cargo aircraft depart from and return to this location, and the company is building a maintenance hangar at the airport through its own investment.

This not only means stable, long-term traffic and jobs, but also signals to investors that the airport is becoming a true aviation hub, one that other players can safely join. The establishment of an MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) base brings with it demand for parts logistics, metal and composite machining, surface treatment, and engineering and avionics services—in other words, an excellent breeding ground for the formation of an aerospace supplier cluster.

The airport’s history is primarily linked to sports and charter traffic, with occasional scheduled passenger flights. Although there is currently no regular scheduled passenger service, the goal of the owners and regional stakeholders is clear: to bring passenger traffic back in the coming years, particularly for regional turboprop aircraft (such as the passenger version of the ATR72). From

an investor’s perspective, this is not a shortcoming but an opportunity: it represents an open market for airlines, charter operators, tour operators, and hotel chains, who can jointly develop new air travel products based on the tourism offerings of Pécs and the region.

The airport’s location is a major draw in itself. Pécs’s industrial and logistics parks, which are directly connected to the M60 highway, are just a few minutes’ drive away. The triangle formed by the industrial parks and the airport is ideally suited for the development of an air–road logistics hub, a refrigerated warehouse (for example, with pharmaceutical or food logistics functions), an e-commerce fulfillment center, or a complex 3PL/4PL logistics service. Due to its proximity to the Croatian border and the corridor leading to the Adriatic, the airport could serve as an ideal hub for companies operating in the Hungarian–Croatian–Slovenian–Northern Italian corridor, for which fast, reliable, and time-sensitive transportation is crucial.

Pécs-Pogány Airport continues to accommodate business aircraft today: it offers flexible services, fuel supply, and parking facilities for private planes and business jets. This infrastructure creates an opportunity for Pécs and its surrounding area to become an attractive destination for regional corporate headquarters, shared service centers, and research and development centers. Business aviation brings high-value-added jobs and a strong presence of decision-makers to the region, especially if, building on this base, FBO (Fixed-Base Operator)-style premium services are introduced—such as a VIP lounge, crew facilities, a dedicated hangar, and personalized ground services.

The tourism assets of Pécs and Baranya—UNESCO World Heritage sites, a vibrant cultural life, the Villány wine region, and the spa and wellness tourism of Harkány and Siklós—can be well integrated with the opportunities offered by the airport. In the future, a realistic scenario could involve launching seasonal charter flights to the Adriatic, offering themed “wine and spa” packages with air access, and introducing city-break flights from major European cities to Pécs. These projects typically require investor collaborations in which the airline, tour operator, hotel industry, and local development stakeholders work together to build the new product.

Another strength of the airport is that its traffic has not yet reached capacity, its airspace is easily controllable, and it is well-suited to hosting innovative, experimental projects. In the fields of drone logistics, autonomous aerial systems, aerial surveying, and sensor technologies, the airport can offer an excellent “living lab” environment for research and development projects and university-industry collaborations. By connecting the University of Pécs, vocational training institutions, and industry players, training and experimental programs can be launched to train the future professionals of the aviation industry locally.

The operation of Pécs-Pogány Airport is managed by Pécs-Pogány Airport Operating Ltd., with significant state ownership. This creates a stable foundation and a predictable development policy environment, particularly as government and county strategies prioritize improving the region’s transport accessibility and alleviating economic isolation. Various development programs—such as TOP Plus—place a strong emphasis on supporting logistics, industrial park, and employment investments, which also provides a favorable framework for projects centered around the airport.

Overall, Pécs-Pogány Airport is currently in a phase where a new stage of development is being built upon its existing, operational infrastructure. An international cargo

airline has established a base here, a maintenance center is under construction, and basic airport and business aviation services are available, while road connections and the industrial environment are competitive even by European standards.

For an investor, all of this can be summarized in three key messages:

– the airport awaits new entrants with a ready, operational infrastructure;

– it is closely connected to the highway, industrial parks, and cross-border economic corridors; and

– it still has significant growth potential in terms of scheduled passenger traffic, air services, and innovative projects.

Pécs-Pogány is therefore not just an airport on the map, but an emerging, dynamic economic hub that is well worth joining now.
