Ormánsági Öntöző Kft.’s new, modern irrigation system was officially launched in Vajszló and at three other locations in Western Baranya. The total cost of the project is 1.5 billion forints, of which 1 billion forints was provided by the Hungarian government as a grant. Simply put, the goal of the investment is to enable farmers to produce under more predictable conditions, ensuring that high-quality, affordable food reaches local tables more reliably.

What does this mean in everyday life?

  • Greater crop security: Irrigation reduces the risk of sudden droughts destroying the crop.
  • Better quality: Thanks to a consistent water supply, the resulting crops are more attractive, uniform, and marketable.
  • Stable jobs: the company provides a livelihood for more than thirty families—when production is predictable, employment is more stable.
  • A stronger local economy: more reliable harvests mean higher revenues for the region, which can also give a boost to other businesses.

What kind of technology was used on the fields?

The installed Bauer Center Pivot irrigation systems are among the most advanced available. Imagine a long, arm-like structure that slowly rotates around the center of the field, delivering exactly the amount of water the plants need.
Why is this good?

  • targeted, efficient water use
  • less waste, lower environmental impact
  • a system that can be operated reliably around the clock

Where was the project implemented?

Such irrigation systems have been installed at four locations in Western Baranya, with Vajszló playing a central role. The system is tailored to local conditions, allowing several farms in the area to benefit from the development.

Why now? Why is it important?

The weather is becoming increasingly unpredictable: long, rainless periods are common, followed by sudden downpours. Irrigation can help counteract this volatility. This development is good news not only for farmers: for the general public, it means that locally produced food can be more accessible and of more consistent quality, while the local economy becomes more resilient.

Bigger picture: national subsidies

It was announced at the handover ceremony that a budget of 176 billion forints is available for drought mitigation, which will fund approximately 1,300 projects across the country. This indicates that the modernization of agriculture is a national priority, and local investment is part of this larger program.

How might the public perceive this?

  • Visuals: slow-moving structures appear in the fields from time to time—this is a natural part of the irrigation process.
  • Traffic: During the installation period, there may have been construction vehicles and temporary traffic restrictions, but operations do not interfere with traffic.

Environment: The system is water-efficient and delivers water in a targeted manner, resulting in a lower environmental impact than older methods.
