Another major industrial investment has been completed in Pécs: KONTAKT-Elektro Kft. will inaugurate its nearly 1,450-square-meter production facility at its Mohácsi út site on September 23. The 1.2 billion forint development project primarily expands the manufacturing and assembly of equipment for electric buses and trucks. Only companies from Pécs and Baranya County were involved in the construction.
As part of the investment project launched in August 2025, state-of-the-art welding and machine shops have been established, and a new CNC press brake and laser cutting center are being put into operation. The new facility not only provides a larger production area: the goal of the expansion is to organize production processes more efficiently, increase in-house machining capacity, and fulfill international orders more quickly.
The facility has a usable floor area of 1,426 square meters. As part of the project, the company will purchase, among other things, a welding table, a forklift, a crimping machine, a handheld laser welder, a magnetic-base drill, a waste baler, and a gasket-making machine. The investment also includes IT upgrades and the purchase of an electric commercial vehicle.
Equipment from Pécs is being supplied to the international automotive industry
Since 2023, KONTAKT-Elektro has been a supplier of power supply and charging control equipment for electric buses and trucks. The units, which are mass-produced in Pécs, are shipped entirely to foreign markets.
This capacity expansion thus directly strengthens Pécs and Baranya’s ties to the international electric vehicle industry. This development is particularly significant because it involves more than just assembly work: the company is building on its own expertise in engineering, automation, electronics, and manufacturing technology.
However, KONTAKT-Elektro’s operations extend far beyond electromobility. The company also designs and manufactures electrical switchgear and control panels, industrial automation systems, robotic manufacturing solutions, and electronic equipment. In addition to the automotive industry, its client base includes the food industry, the building materials and cement industries, the energy sector, logistics, agriculture, and water and wastewater treatment, among others.
The new facility will therefore serve both to advance the traditional automation business and to increase mass production in the electric vehicle industry.
Energy-efficient solutions were also incorporated
During the project, attention was also paid to ensuring the building’s energy-efficient operation. An air-to-water heat pump system provides heating and cooling for the new hall, and the company’s solar power capacity will be increased by an additional 100 kilowatts.
Three charging stations capable of servicing electric vehicles will also be installed at the site. This development will not only expand production related to electromobility but also make the site’s operations more energy-efficient.
They pre-financed the investment using their own funds
KONTAKT-Elektro pre-financed the 1.2 billion forint investment using its own funds. According to the company’s announcement, the process of drawing down subsidies and financing related to the project had not yet begun as of the date of the announcement.
The company received a non-repayable grant of 110 million forints under the Sándor Demján 1+1 SME Investment Stimulus Program. Publicly available data related to the GINOP Plus National Champions program indicate an additional 270.8 million forints in repayable financing and 116.1 million forints in non-repayable financing.
A family-owned business in Pécs that has been in operation for more than forty years
The history of KONTAKT-Elektro began in 1982. The company, which initially operated out of its own 120-square-meter workshop, began offering its products and services abroad as early as the 1980s. By 2004, the company had become wholly family-owned, and in 2018, Olivér Hirth took over management from the founder, Ferenc Hirth.
The company, which currently employs approximately 120 people, has a track record in nearly fifty countries. The Mohácsi út facility has been expanded in several phases over the past few decades: a new workshop was completed in 2011, an additional assembly hall in 2015, and a central warehouse in 2017.
The continuous introduction of new technologies has played a key role in the company’s growth. In addition to traditional electrical manufacturing, the company has adopted robotics, 3D laser machining, digital production management, and, most recently, mass production for the electric vehicle industry.
They are also working on a hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicle
KONTAKT-Elektro has been engaged in hydrogen technology development for nearly twenty years. It built its first fuel cell prototype in 2008, and in 2020, it unveiled a small boat powered by a 15-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell.
The company is currently working on a prototype hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicle. They are collaborating with the University of Pécs and the city of Pécs on this project. The prototype is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, and the vehicle currently under development will be unveiled at the hall opening ceremony on September 23.
The waste collection vehicle is currently in the development phase; no public decision has yet been made regarding its mass production or commissioning. At the same time, the project clearly demonstrates that the Pécs-based company sees potential not only in battery-powered electromobility but also in hydrogen-based transportation solutions.
Businesses in Baranya also benefited from the investment
The development generated direct business in the region even during the construction phase, as only companies from Pécs and Baranya County were involved in the construction work.
In the longer term, the most significant outcome of the investment could be an increase in export-ready manufacturing capacity with high technical added value. The equipment manufactured in Pécs will be integrated into international automotive supply chains, which could strengthen Baranya’s presence in the electromobility and industrial automation markets.
The primary goal of the project is to increase production volume, organize production more efficiently, and fulfill the growing number of export orders.
The new production facility will be inaugurated on September 23, 2026, at KONTAKT-Elektro’s Pécs location at 79 Mohácsi út.
