Some of the most compelling economic development stories begin where different worlds come together. In Pécs, the precision of mechanical engineering and the expertise of medical research are converging in projects that go beyond traditional industry boundaries. The collaboration between MATRO Ltd. and the University of Pécs demonstrates the potential that emerges when a local manufacturing company and a strong academic knowledge base work together on innovative developments.

One important focus of this cooperation is the production of an implantable metal plate used in the surgical treatment of pectus excavatum, a congenital chest wall deformity commonly known as funnel chest. While the medical procedure itself is supported by the University’s research and clinical expertise, the manufacturing of the specialised component requires the high level of precision and metalworking capabilities in which the Pécs-based company has extensive experience.

This development highlights how engineering expertise can create value far beyond conventional industrial applications. When combined with strong medical and research capabilities, it can become the foundation of healthcare innovation. The production of customised implants based on 3D designs requires exceptional precision, reliable technology and a manufacturing culture capable of meeting the demands of highly sensitive medical applications.

The partnership between the company and the University extends well beyond a single project. Another area of cooperation involves reproductive research, where a specialised microscope incubator is being developed as part of a system designed to analyse the characteristics of photons emitted by embryos. The aim is to support the selection of embryos with the greatest potential for successful implantation. This project operates at the intersection of engineering, medicine and the natural sciences, illustrating the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of innovation.

A third key pillar of the collaboration is ultra-precision machining. A specialised machining centre installed at MATRO’s facility is capable of performing highly accurate micromechanical operations and also creates new opportunities for research activities. Such technology is valuable not only from an industrial perspective but also as a platform for future research and development projects involving experts from the University of Pécs.

The educational dimension of the partnership is equally important. MATRO has maintained a long-standing relationship with the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Pécs, particularly in the field of mechanical engineering. This cooperation contributes not only to research and development projects but also to talent development, student engagement and practice-oriented engineering education.

From the perspective of Baranya’s economic positioning, this story carries a particularly strong message. It demonstrates that the county offers not only manufacturing capacity but also a collaborative environment in which industrial expertise, academic research, medical innovation and engineering education can come together to generate new developments.

This is precisely the type of ecosystem that can attract higher-value investments. The intersection of healthcare, medical technology, precision manufacturing and research and development represents a field with significant growth potential. Pécs and Baranya can strengthen their position in this landscape by making such collaborations more visible and by building on their success.

The key question for the coming years will be what marketable products, new healthcare supply-chain partnerships, intellectual property outcomes and additional university–industry projects emerge from these joint developments. What is already clear, however, is that in Baranya the relationship between industry and science goes far beyond formal cooperation—it is evolving into genuine, productive collaboration.
